RENUNCIATION/SURRENDERING OF INDIAN CITIZENSHIP

1. Indian Citizenship Act does not provide for dual citizenship. As per the Passport Act, it is mandatory for all Indian passport holders to surrender their last Indian passport to the High Commission immediately after acquisition of foreign nationality. It is an offense under the Citizenship Act and the Passports Act for foreign nationals to hold Indian passports.

2. Applicant needs to submit following documents:

(i) Two copies of completed Renunciation Application Form.

(ii) Last Indian Passport;

(iii) Copy of Naturalization Certificate;

(iv) Copy of Current valid Passport.

3. Once Indian passport is surrendered, it will be returned to the Passport holder after cancellation along with Renunciation/Surrender certificate.

4. Fee charged for surrender of Indian passport may be seen in the fee schedule.

Note : Applicable Penalty would be imposed for non-surrender of Indian passport after acquiring a foreign passport and travel on the Indian passport thereafter.
