IGCC is organising an evening of Rabindra Sangeet by Ms. Apala Basu from India at Kobi Sufia Kamal Auditorium, Bangladesh National Museum, Shahbagh, Dhaka at 6.00 PM on Saturday, 27 January, 2018.

Ms. Apala Basu grew up in a family of music-lovers, and her passion for Rabindra Sangeet has been ever-present since childhood. She completed her initial training from the well-known ‘Gitabitan’ School in Kolkata, India, and has taken further tutelage under the guidance of Sri Mallar Bose. She also completed a Certified Special Course of Studies in Rabindra Sangeet from Visva-Bharati University, Shantiniketan, in 2005. She has participated in a wide range of workshops with renowned exponents including Late Sri Subhash Choudhury, Sri Dwijen Mukhopadhyay, Sri Rajeshwar Bhattacharjee and Smt Sanghamitra Gupta.

In 2000, she founded ‘Surolok’, an organisation of amateur enthusiasts and professionals based in Kolkata, and the group has successfully toured across India and presented Tagore dance dramas and theatres. Under her able and enthusiastic leadership, ‘Surolok’ has participated in various cultural programmes organized by the Cultural Department of West Bengal, India, as well as in well-established clubs of Kolkata such as Bengal Club, Tollygunge Club and Lake Club, to name a few.

She has also enjoyed a successful solo career and her many recordings of Tagore songs on television and CD have been widely praised and well received.

She is currently preparing for upcoming dance drama performances of Shyama, Shapmochon, Chandalika and Chitrangada with her group Surolok in celebration of Tagore’s birthday. When she is not singing or performing, Apala teaches English language at Ramkrishna Mission Institute of Culture, Kolkata.

All are cordially invited to attend the programme. Entry is open to all (there is no need to collect Invitation Pass).
