High Commissioner’s remarks at welcome reception by Bangladesh-India Friendship Society

[18 March 2019]

Prof Dr. AK Azad Chowdhury

President Bangladesh-India Friendship Society;

Shri Subir Kushari,

General Secretary, Bangladesh-India Friendship Society;

Dr. Adarsh Swaika,

Deputy High Commissioner

Distinguished Members of Bangladesh-India Friendship Society;

Friends, Ladies and Gentlemen;

At the outset I would like to thank the Bangladesh-India Friendship Society for according this grand reception to me and particularly in March which is one of the most important months in your calendar marking 3 significant events - the historic speech made by Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on 7 March, 1971; his 99th birth anniversary yesterday (17 March) and Independence Day of Bangladesh on 26 March.

High Commission has been associated with the society since its inception.

The society was jointly launched under the aegis of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and Shrimati Indira Gandhi in 1973.

Since then, the Friendship Society has been continuously working to promote people-to-people contacts between both countries.

As you all know, I have served in Dhaka earlier and I fondly remember so many occasions, when Bangladesh-India Friendship Society brought us together by organizing various events, programs, discussion forum etc.

Friendship Society never let any landmark day and festival go unnoticed without appropriately observing that.

We also jointly observed commemoration of many important persons who shape up our history.

Friendship Society has various local chapters spread all over Bangladesh. You all are distinguished members of Bangladesh Society.

We share many things between us.

Our common struggle for the Liberation War of Bangladesh and great sacrifice in that pursuit will continue to inspire us to work together for the better future of our common people of both countries.

With the inspiring leadership of Bangabandhu, Bangladesh became independent in 1971. In our time, leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Prime Minister Narendra Modi has taken our bilateral relationship to a new height.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi describes our current relationship as Sonali Adhyaya.

Each one of you has immensely contributed to make this possible. You are the bridge between the people of Bangladesh and India.

I hope that we will continue to get your support in future.

Once again, I would like to thank the Friendship Society for hosting this event and providing an opportunity to meet our friends.
